This piece started off as a warmup and became a style experiment, exploring a new shading style. I combined rough cel shading and blended color values to add a painterly texture. I wanted to try Rembrandt lighting and chose this reference. I squashed her facial proportions, then substituted hair and clothes to better fit the description of my original character, Valencia. Valencia is a lead character in my novel, Maleficus.
